A New Convert to the Church of Molina

Last week i got a chance to go see The Magnolia Electric Co, and aside from being thrilled to see them because they are one of my favorite bands, i was especially excited since i was bringing a friend who i always thought would really get this band. As it turned out, he loved the show, bought some cds on the way out, and we got to talk music on the way home.

There are so many things i *love* about music. Discovering a new band, or a new song that just resonantes with you. Getting to see a great live band for the first time, or getting to see one you have seen many times play a new songs, or old songs new ways. Sometimes you connect with the lyric and find this musical thing that expresses something you have felt for years, but never knew how to express. Whatever. There are more ways that music touches me that i can count.

One of the best, and rarest, ways i get to enjoy music is when i get to share some *true* music with someone who gets what is being shared. That's what happened at the Magnolia show, and it was great. Im glad he liked the show.

As it turned out, the opening band "Shearwater" was also very good. I had picked up thier latest a few days before the show , and the live show helped to illuminate the disc for me. Its a side project of sorts for some of the Okkervil River guys who are incedentally coming to Buffalo next month. That reminds me, i better snag some tickets before i forget.

There is so much good music coming out these days. Just in the last 7-10 days i have picked up:

Shearwater - Palo Santo
Magnolia Electric Co - Fading Trails
Jason Molina - let me go let me go let me go
Woven Hand - Mosaic
Viva Voce - Get Yr Blood Sucked Out
Soundtrack - Im Your Man

Bishop Patrick,

I've been loving on that shearwater cd all summer.

I'm glad to hear that your friend like MeCo. I'm taking some friends to the church of molina in the middle of the month. Let's hope they're ready.

Talk soon. -sw
