Do not decode these cries of mine, they are the road and not the sign

Surreal at times, but worth every minute

A few weeks ago i recieved an invite for a surprise birthday party for an ex, from her husband, who i had never met. As you can imagine, it was a little unexpected. As you can probably also imagine, i was unclear how to proceed.

Since i love awkward social situations, i was leaning towards going from the very beginning. That's mostly a joke (true as it may be), as the main enticement for going was that this was an ex that i was on very good terms with, and who's friends and family are well worth a trip to NYC for. I had not seen her in 4 years, and had not seen the friends and family in about 6.

Im sure it seems like i run a pretty crappy blog (i do) for not mentioning this sooner, but the old lady (soon she'll be as old as me, and that's old ) who was being celebrated at said party is a blog reader of mine (i think i have 3. i rule).

I was up in the air about going until the morning of the party when i said "what the hell" and packed up some stuff and left my apartment for a solo drive from Buffalo to NYC.

In hindsight, i'm now realizing that i was only away for 28 1/2 hours. I left 9am on sat, and was back ready to watch football at 12:30 Pm this afternoon. That's insane! And of course, fun. I don't do enough things in life by the seat of my pants.

There is not enough space in this blog to share all my feelings and interactions that occured over these 28 1/2 hours, but trust me it was a good time. Seeing my ex's dad, meeting her husband, seeing all the friends who im sure thought i was odd back in the day and maybe even more odd for being at this occasion now, remembering why i like the NYC area so much...

I hope the people who were there know how glad i was to be there. Patrick at a party can be a tough read i imagine. Surely i must look out of place and like im not having a good time, but it's just how i am. I love watching the party from the pariphary and interjecting when the time is right. I had a great time.

My advice for anyone reading this out there is this. If there are people you have come across in your life that make you smile, make you laugh, and remind you why life is worth living, then do what it takes to not leave them behind for long. It doesnt matter what happened between you, what needs to be forgiven, what needs to be forgotten, or what conventional norm you need to fly in the face of, be near these people when you can, and enjoy every minute of it.
