How The West Was Won

My Los Angeles Dodgers won the NL West today, not only making me generally happy as a Dodgers fan, but it also won me a bet! See, my buddy stated before the season began that the Arizona Diamondbacks would win the west, and i told him he was crazy. So we made a bet, if the Diamondbacks won the west, i would have to drink a huge beer. I dont like beer at all, so this was an unsavory thought for me. If the Diamondbacks did not win the west, he would have to sing "It's Raining Men" at Kareoke.

So Wednesday night, Elmwood Lounge in Buffalo. Be there around 10PM. It will be raining men.

Finally got to see Sigur Ros after all these years and it was worth the wait. Sorry i forgot to snap a picture of the tremendous amount of confetti that shot everywhere at the end of Gobbledigook, and there are no pictures during Popplagid cause well, i was too busy enjoying myself. Even without any of the other musicians that frequently share the stage with Sigur Ros present, it was still a very big and full sound. The only song i missed the additional musicians on was Hoppipolla. I also never realised how cool of a song Ny Batteri was. Now i know.

(Someone else took this great photo of the confetti.... enjoy)

Ours at the Tralf

I got a chance to catch Ours last night at the Tralf here in Buffalo. They had cancelled a show earlier in the summer at Showplace and were nice enough to make sure to reschedule. The Tralf is a *much* nicer venue so it worked out well. Sadly, there were not more than 50 people or so there. They play mostly stuff from their new album, which is fine, as its excellent. They even played one that had never played before, "Saint".

Jimmy Gnecco is always a pleasure to see. Not only is he the closest thing you're gonna get to a reincarnated Jeff Buckley live in concert, but he's one of the most passionate front men out there. Its a joy to see him all over the stage, screaming and singing with all his heart. It makes for a terrific show, and its one of the reasons i always try to catch Ours when i get the chance.

Beautiful Heart (R. Swift)

One day i will see you my friend
One day when you swallow the night
When all things crooked or straight
Wrapped up there in Heaven's twilight

One day i will see you my friend
One day when you swallow the night
When the broken hearted will sing
And the poor have everything
I will toss my crown...

You, with your beautiful heart
Your beautiful heart
You, with your beautiful heart
Your beautiful heart

One day i will see you my friend
One day when you swallow the night
That day when i fall apart
At the sound of your beating heart
I will toss my crown...

You, with your beautiful heart
Your beautiful heart
You, with your beautiful heart
Your beautiful heart

The Stand Ins

I really wanted not to like this album. I wished Okkervil would have just made The Stage Names longer. The problem is, that i listened to The Stand Ins. Its a good album. Not only is it good... I think i like it better than Stage Names.

"Lost Coastlines" is amazing. I cant stop listening to it. "On Tour with Zykos" has been around forever, it just used to be called "Girl i Knew, Guy i Met". The studio version here is great. I cant wait to hear "Blue Tulip" and "Pop Lie" live.

So yeah, it's excellent. Go get it.

The Body is a Stairway of Skin (OTR)

the body
is a stairway
of skin
you open the door
i let you in
carry your story
through the thick and thin
i feel the angels
dancing on a pin
they dance

the body
is a book
of matches
a little fire
is required
of this kindling flame
Ohio Blue Tip Strike Anywhere
strike me
anywhere

the body
is a hallway
of mirrors
you have to jump
and a net will appear
you can see
there are so many of us
here
breaking
is the one thing
we all fear
breaking is the one thing
break it down
break me down like the quiet part of a song
the body
is an apple
on a tree
the body
is an apple
on the very first tree
ripe
round
forbidden
ripe
round
shake it down

Thirty two and counting

"The harvester is here
his blade is on your skin
to plant a new beginning
Well then, let the cut begin"

Birthdays on some level are always a good time to reflect and see how things are going in your life. Im happy to say that when i looked over things i smiled. Im blessed with so much, and im happy all the time. I know not everyone can say that, so i try to remember it as often as i can, and not take it for granted.

Im also trying to be open to new beginnings. Im a creature of habit, and change, which is part of new beginnings, isnt really my strong suit. However, if im honest with myself, new beginnings are almost always well worth the uncertainty and change. I can say that for sure of the things in my life that have begun recently. Not that i wasnt happy before, but its amazing to be happy, and then add things to your life that just increase your level of happiness in multiple areas.

Alright, im not gonna gush about my abundance of happiness any longer. Its all true, but doesnt make for very good reading =P.

On a side note im looking forward to 10 years from now when ill be the answer to life, the universe, and everything. Start thinking of questions to ask me, and ill give advice once i get there.
